CORYDON — Brownstown Central boys track and field coach Derrick Koch said it took a great team performance for the Braves to win the Mid-Southern Conference meet Thursday night.

The Braves piled up 117 points to win the school’s first MSC boys title since 2013. Charlestown was second with 107 points, followed by host Corydon Central with 90, Austin with 69.5, North Harrison 69, Salem 60, Silver Creek 44, Eastern 42.5 and Scottsburg 25.

Levi Nehrt was the head coach of the 2013 team.

Brownstown clinched the title Thursday when Gregory Hutcheson, Garrett Driver, Lane Zike and Isiaah Engle teamed up to place second in the final event, the 4×4 relay. The Braves ran 3:35.68, and Corydon was first at 3:34.31.

The Braves had two people score in both hurdles, the 100, 200, 400, 1600, 3200, shot put and discus, and Koch said that was a key to winning the big trophy. The only events the Braves did not score in were high jump and pole vault.

“Coming in here, I told the guys we had to have two in every event trying to score. It didn’t matter what places you are in at that point. If we’re scoring two people in every event, it’s going to lead to a win, and it did tonight. Good for those guys,’’ he said. “We had a lot of guys in all areas that scored really well. Some of them scored points that they didn’t think they were going to get. When one person is off, another one steps up, and that is exactly what our team did tonight. It’s fun to watch a great effort.”

The Braves won two events as Garrett Driver was first in the 400 in 52.13 and the 4×100 relay team of Hudson Fritz, Caleb Cummings, Engle and Jack Pace were first at 44.3.

The Braves set the school record May 4 at the Jennings County Relays.

“We had Silver Creek placed beside us. We were seeded first by .01,” Cummings said. “It was not a PR, but we strive to get better every day. It feels great. Now, we’re going to the sectional. Same thing.”

This is the second straight year for Driver, a junior, to win the 400 at the MSC.

“I felt really good with my start, explosive,” he said. ‘‘Bombastic was probably a good word. The back stretch is very important in the 400 and in a race like this. That is where you really kind of separate yourself from everybody else. The straightaway, the last part, you’ve got all the adrenaline from everybody cheering you on. It’s a great feeling. I feel winning is more rewarding than a piece of fabric (ribbon) or a piece of hardware (trophy).”

Brownstown had one of the youngest teams at the meet, as there were just two seniors, Cummings and Bradley Edwards.

“We definitely had a lot of scoring going on from the underclassmen,” Koch said. “You can take a look at the shot put and discus. We had a freshman and a sophomore score. That was big.”

Sophomore Jaden Disque was third in the discus (127-3) and eighth in the shot, and freshman Isaac Hutchinson was eighth in the discus.

The Braves’ other points in the shot put came from Ryan Branaman, who was fourth.

Cummings placed second (23.78) and Jack Pace fourth (24.2) in the 200 after Fritz placed third (11.63) and Cummings was fourth in the 100. Pace was sixth in the long jump.

The Braves had two places in the 400, as Lane Zike was seventh.

Edwards was fifth in the 800, Chance Ratliff was fifth and Shane Ratliff eighth in the 1600 and Chance was fifth and Shane was seventh in the 3200.

Engle was third (17.11) and Hutcheson was fourth (17.25) in the high hurdles, and Engle was second (43.0) and Hutcheson third (43.4) in the 300 hurdles.

The Braves were fifth in the 4×8 relay.

Jake Ottersbach had an outstanding meet for Charlestown. He won the 110 hurdles in 15.1, 300 hurdles in 40.69, long jump at 21-10.75 and high jump at 6-5.

The Braves will compete in the sectional at Bedford North Lawrence High School on Thursday night.

“This was a great leadway into that,” Koch said. “These guys keep getting better and better, and it’s fun to watch them compete, so I’m excited about the sectional. Every time these guys come out onto the track, they’re ready to go 100%.”
