BROWNSTOWN — The Brownstown Central baseball team scored nine runs in both games on Saturday against Henryville, and one was more stressful than the other as the Braves were able to beat the Hornets twice.

In the first game, Brownstown trailed 1-0 after one inning when Eli Kleinert hit a solo home run.

The Braves responded in a big way with four runs in the second inning and four runs in the third inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead.

Ethan Garland, Jaxson Johnson and Pierson Wheeler all had three hits in the game, Carson Darlage had two, and Trent Lowery, Dalton Reedy and Lane Pendleton all had one hit.

Darlage had three RBI, while Garland, Lowery, Reedy, Johnson and Chick Tiemeyer all had one RBI.

Scoring the runs were Tiemeyer (2), Johnson (2), Wheeler (2), Garland (1), Pendleton (1) and Lane Steward (1).

“We made some adjustments after that first inning,” Brownstown head coach Duane Higgs said. “We talked about staying back and barreling the balls up, and once we got on base, we were aggressive and doing some good things, had some good at-bats.”

The Braves had nine stolen bases with Darlage, Tiemeyer and Wheeler each having two, and Garland, Pendleton and Tiemeyer all had one.

Henryville scored three runs in the top of the fifth and Brownstown scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, then the Hornets responded with four more in the top of the sixth, including a three-run home run from Cade Riley.

“We stayed tough,” Higgs said. “You’ve got to give them a lot of credit to come back from 8-1. They started to hit the ball well. They’re a well-coached team.”

In the bottom of the seventh, Ethan Fultz had to record three outs on the mound, and Henryville was threatening with a man on third base with one out.

The Braves were able to make the defensive plays needed to get out of the inning and secure the victory.

“Ethan at the end of the day is a baseball player,” Higgs said. “He understands how to play the game not just physically but mentally. He has a lot of toughness, and he knows what he needs to do to get the job done, and he did that.”

Garland went five innings to start the game for BC and had five strikeouts, and Fultz had one strikeout in his two innings.

The second game was much less stressful for the Braves, who were victorious 9-0 behind an incredible pitching performance from Darlage.

The senior threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts. Of the 22 at-bats Henryville had in the game, only six of them didn’t end with a K.

On top of the pitching, Darlage hit a home run, and Fultz also hit one over the fence.

Garland, Darlage, Grayson Cassidy and Fultz all had two hits, Wheeler had four hits and Lowery and Pendleton each had one hit.

Darlage, Wheeler and Fultz each had two RBI, and Garland had one.

Brownstown has now won six games in a row and nine of its last 10 games.

The Braves will be on the road all week this week, playing at Mitchell on Tuesday, at Charlestown on Thursday and at Borden for a doubleheader on Saturday.

“They’re buying in. Our biggest thing is not just consistency from game to game but consistency from inning to inning,” Higgs said. “We lost a little bit of that midgame (in game one). We lost some of our energy and focus from our dugout. Hopefully, we can be more consistent in a seven-inning game.”
