Braves can’t cash in on opportunities in loss to Red Devils

BROWNSTOWN — Brownstown Central’s softball team had base runners in five of its seven at-bats against Jeffersonville on Saturday and outhit the Red Devils 9-8.

However, the visitors also had runners in five innings and scored in four of them to go home with a 6-2 win.

“The hit difference in the game wasn’t near as big as the run difference,” Braves coach Darren Bryant said. “A couple different times, we got to the bottom of the order and got someone on base and was coming up in a good position (top of the order) and just couldn’t follow that up with some hits from some girls that are very good hitters. We had our opportunities. We just didn’t come through.”

The Braves were making contact as Jeffersonville’s pitcher only had four strikeouts and walked two.

It didn’t take long for the Red Devils to take the lead as Brooklyn Mills homered with one out in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead.

Jeff used two hits, a walk and a sacrifice to score twice in the top of the second.

Adelynn Anderson led off the bottom of the third inning with a hit. She moved to second when Rylin Huddleston walked and scored on a single by Rylee May.

The score remained 3-1 until the top of the fifth when the Devils bunched three hits together to score twice, then used a walk, two sacrifice bunts and another hit for a run in the sixth.

Schneider was safe on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the seventh and scored on May’s double.

Kyndle Huddleston followed with another hit, but the next batter grounded out to end the game.

The Braves stranded two runners each in the second, fifth, sixth and seventh innings and nine for the game.

Schneider, May and Rylin Huddleston had two hits each with Kyndle Huddleston, Olivia Justice and Anderson getting one hit each. May had the Braves’ only extra base hit, the double in the seventh, and had both RBI.

May started on the mound and went 4.2 innings and allowed five runs and five hits, struck out three and didn’t walk any.

Rylin Huddleston finished and allowed three hits and one run and had one strikeout and one walk.

“(May) pitched quite a bit (Friday against Floyd Central). We started with Rylin last night, and she struggled, and we brought in Rylee and she pitched a majority of that game,” Bryant said. “We turned around and kind of flipped that today. That girl hit the home run, and they kept scratching a hit here or there and had a few good-hit balls. Rylee has done a good job all season. I think she was a little sore today after pitching last night. Rylin looked much better today. Now, it’s a matter of finding the one that is feeling it that day.”

The Braves played error-free on defense, much to Bryant’s liking.

“We played much better. We were frustrated (Friday) night. We had been playing solid all year until last night,” he said. “We made four errors, and all season, I think we either had no errors or one error in every game but one. Today, we were back to what we expect to see.”

The Braves (12-7) will host Columbus North today.
