Twice as nice: Seymour sweeps New Albany in doubleheader to stay undefeated

The Seymour baseball team had a busy week on the diamond last week.

They started out with a rivalry victory over Brownstown Central last Monday, got a road victory on Tuesday at North Harrison, picked up a Hoosier Hills Conference win over Columbus East on Thursday and held off a tough Salem team on Friday.

Of all of those victories, the two that followed on Saturday were loud statements on an already impressive resume.

Seymour hosted HHC foe New Albany for a doubleheader Saturday. The Bulldogs have been a force in the conference as of late, and the Owls, who believe they are one of the top teams this season, came ready to play.

“Saturday was a great day for the guys,” Seymour head coach Jeremy Richey said. “They came in confident and left with more. This group has high expectations for themselves and our team.”

Bret Perry took the mound in game one. Without a loss on his resume this season, Perry pitched another masterpiece.

He only allowed one run to New Albany, who had been averaging about eight runs per game in this early season.

Charlie Longmeier was the hero at the plate in the first game. He had a two-run double to take the lead as the Owls ended up winning the game 2-1.

In the second game, New Albany jumped out in front in the second inning with a two-out base hit from Maxwell Alexander to take a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, the Bulldogs got another run with a single, a walk and a single to make it 2-0.

Then Mikey Wright kept New Albany at bay, and Seymour’s offense responded.

In the fourth inning, Perry reached on an error, followed by a Jack VonDielingen infield single. A wild pitch moved Perry to third base and VonDielingen to second. Aiden Darlage then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Perry.

Vince Wilson singled to get on base, and while Treyton McCormick was at the plate, a wild pitch brought home VonDielingen to even the game up at 2.

Gavin Leavy came in to pitch for Seymour for the final three innings and was able to hold the Bulldogs scoreless despite facing some runners in scoring positions for New Albany.

In the bottom of the seventh, Darlage reached on an error. Wilson laid down a bunt to get Darlage to second base, and he was safe himself at first. McCormick then bunted and loaded the bases with nobody out.

Braden Richey then hit a ground ball to second base, and the throw was over the catcher’s head as Darlage safely scored to walk it off for Seymour.

“We have confidence that our offense is going to score runs,” coach Richey said. “The best part of scoring the runs Saturday is we manufactured the runs. We played the small ball game well and got the big hits when we needed them. This group has a bunch of guys that want to be at the plate in those situations.”

As good as the offense has been for Seymour so far this season, Richey was pleased with the way his team pitched and defended.

“We have worked really hard on being a good defensive team,” he said. “Saturday, we had great pitching, and we made plays defensively.”

The Owls are now a perfect 7-0 this season and are off to a 3-0 conference start.

This week, Seymour will travel to South Dearborn on Tuesday, a team that recently beat New Albany 10-4. Then they travel to Jeffersonville on Thursday, followed by a home game against Austin on Friday.
