Seymour’s Perry headlines all-county baseball team

Bret Perry would occasionally check his stats during the baseball season this past spring, and when he saw his numbers, he’d think to himself “Oh wow! I’m doing pretty well.”

Perry would quickly follow that thought up with another: “Can I maintain this through the whole season?”

The answer was yes. Perry’s contributions both on the mound and in the batter’s box were a big reason Seymour went 18-10 this season, which is the program’s most wins since 2012.

Due to Perry’s success, he has been named The Tribune’s Baseball Player of the Year.

“I spent a lot of time in the cage just trying to perfect my swing,” Perry said. “You know, I’ve spent a lot of time hitting a baseball in my life. I feel like since I was like 5, all that experience I’ve had really helped me out. I just try to be as confident as I can be in the box.”

Perry had a .448 batting average with 32 runs, 39 hits, six doubles, three triples and 20 RBI. He was co-hitter of the year for Seymour along with Charlie Longmeier, who had very similar batting statistics.

But Perry also pitched for the Owls, picking up four wins on the mound during the season. The sophomore takes pride in the fact he can be versatile for his team.

“I value that a lot,” he said. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to help my team win. Whether it’s on the mound or at the plate or in the field, I want to do whatever it takes to win.”

Perry was one of three Owls to also be selected to the all-Hoosier Hills Conference first team.

At Seymour’s awards banquet last week, a recurring theme was how tight-knit this year’s squad was. Perry felt that played a big role in the success on the field.

“I feel like we were really close as a team,” he said. “We had a lot of confidence in each other in the field, and in the locker room, we were close. We’re all really talented, and we played together for a while, and I feel like it really showed.”

Perry is playing travel ball right now for the Rawlings Tigers, and he hopes to play baseball collegiately, as well. Once the fall rolls around, Perry’s attention will turn to football, where he was Seymour’s starting quarterback last season.

Then in the winter, he’ll be focused on basketball before his junior baseball season gets started next spring. For right now, Perry is focused on adding strength so he can incorporate more power into his swing.

“I’d say probably hit for more power,” Perry said on what he wants to improve on. “I’m more of a base hits guy right now, and I’d like to get stronger and try to improve, get more doubles, triples, maybe a few home runs.”
