Sterling sisters sign NLI to play collegiate softball

Kendrick Sterling just began her senior season in basketball at Seymour High School, and her sister, Camryn Sterling, just wrapped up her senior season in soccer.

Although both talented in their respective fall and winter sports, springtime is where the two senior Sterling sisters thrive.

Kendrick and Camryn will both be seniors on the Seymour softball team this spring, but that won’t be the last time they take the field.

On Thursday night in Seymour’s auxiliary gym, they both signed their national letters on intent to further their softball careers in college.

They were surrounded by family members, coaches, friends and teammates while officially signing the dotted line.

Unlike the past four years in high school, the sisters won’t be on the same team in one year’s time.

Kendrick is going to Ohio Dominican, and Camryn is going to Iowa Western.

“Just to have that assurance of that’s where I’m going to go is pretty awesome,” Kendrick said after she signed.

The two would pull out their laptops at night and email colleges at the same time throughout the recruiting process.

Camryn said whenever Kendrick would get an email back and she wouldn’t, it would just motivate her to work harder.

They were able to bounce ideas off of one another and talk about what they looked for in a school, and there weren’t a ton of similarities in the schools in which they were most interested.

Camryn committed first. She tore her ACL on Sept. 9, 2020, playing soccer, and that set a lot of things back for her.

She had a friend on her travel team who played with Iowa Western, but for the longest time, she wasn’t so sure about heading to Council Bluffs, Iowa.

“They showed more interest in me than I showed in them,” she said, reflecting back on the process.

But once she finally took a visit to the campus, everything changed.

“I know it sounds cheesy, but right when I got on campus, it felt like home,” she said. “This is where I wanted to be.”

On the ride back, Camryn remembers telling her parents she wanted to go there, and her dad was already looking up RVs for road trips to games.

Camryn officially committed to Iowa Western on Dec. 6, 2020.

Making it official this past Thursday was a nice feeling for her after overcoming her injury.

“It was relieving, especially after the past year I’ve had, tearing my ACL,” she said. “Signing now just emphasizes how excited I am.”

Kendrick was on deck after that.

This past summer was when she started to gain some traction with Ohio Dominican.

She visited around 10 colleges, but when she went to Columbus, Ohio, she wanted to be a Panther.

“I really like that it’s close to Columbus, basically in the city,” Kendrick said. “Their softball is amazing. They were conference champs last year. The coaches made it awesome. Their commitment and what they stand for is everything I was looking for.”

Kendrick plays the infield, and she expects to play either on the corners or at second base at Ohio Dominican.

But before she and Camryn go off to college, they both will have one more season at Seymour this spring. The Owls were co-conference champs last season with Bedford North Lawrence, but Seymour did lose a lot of seniors from last year.

“We’re excited. We’re hoping to go out with a bang,” Kendrick said.

“A lot of our returning players are going to have to step up, especially with all the players we lost from last season,” Camryn said. “The expectation is to create some surprises, I would say. We are kind of the underdogs right now.”

After the Seymour season, they will each have one season left with their travel team, which is Finesse Fastpitch based out of Michigan.

Then the two senior Owls will go their separate ways.

Their college destinations were different, the recruiting process went differently for both of them, they committed at different times, but to be able to sign together Thursday was a special moment between the Sterling sisters.

“That was really special. We started this process together, and now, we’re not wrapping it up, but we’re starting another journey, so that’s pretty cool,” Kendrick said.

“We’re very close. We were obviously born together, so with her signing with me, I feel like it brought it all together,” Camryn said. “She encourages me every day. I encourage her every day. We make each other better, so being in this moment and being with her, I really enjoyed it and I’m proud of her and I know she’s proud of me.”
