Seymour senior liked defending the outside

All of Kelsey Lentz’s best memories from playing soccer at Seymour High School involve her teammates.

“It went by really fast, but it was awesome,” Lentz said. “I’ll remember how we got to where we are right now, how we beat the two teams in the sectional (Bedford North Lawrence and Jennings County) and went to the sectional finals. Those were the best.”

She was among the five seniors on the roster.

“I tried to talk to (underclassmen) and be friends with them,” Lentz said. “Some people don’t acknowledge them. I tried to encourage them, or be funny and keep them in an up mood. I tried to be positive no matter what.”

Lentz said she began playing soccer in the seventh grade.

She played outside back for the Owls.

“I was on the outside of the field most of the time,” Lentz said. “My responsibility was to move the ball up or get back for defense, or just clear it.

“Communication is very important. If nobody communicates we could get in the way of passing or if someone doesn’t tell me if they want me back, or if someone doesn’t call me for a pass, I could miss it and the other team could get it.”

Lentz said she enjoyed mixing it up physically with opponents.

“I just like marking up and stopping the opponent,” she said. “It was kind of fun.”

She enjoyed playing at home.

“Home games were a lot of fun. We get to hang around and watch other players get ready during JV games,” Lentz said. “The turf is amazing. We used to play on grass and it would be bumpy and everything. The turf is very smooth and the passes are great. It’s kind of fun to have somewhere to go. Turf is hotter than most fields. It’s easier to play on turf fields.”

She has enjoyed her teachers at SHS.

“We have some really good teachers here that I can go to,” Lentz said. “I can go into Coach (Greg) Musser’s room and do homework. The school offers some really good classes that will help me in the future, anatomy or medical terminology. Overall, the school is great.”
