Seymour man arrested on molestation charges

A 75-year-old Jackson County man faces four counts of child molesting related to a state police investigation into incidents that occurred decades ago, police report.

Jerry Wayne Rice of Seymour was arrested Thursday by the Indiana State Police on a Jackson Circuit Court warrant charging him with two Class A felonies and two Class C felony molestation charges.

According to the probable cause affidavit signed by Detective Jason Duncan, the investigation that led to Rice’s arrest began May 11 when a woman told police Rice had molested her for years beginning in the early 1990s.

That woman said the molestations began when she was 3 or 4 years old and continued until she was 9, according to court records.

The woman also gave police the name of another woman who had told her Rice began molesting her in 1984 when she was 4.

She told Duncan she regrets not coming forward sooner because she thinks she might have been able to prevent sexual abuse from happening to other children.

Duncan said he felt inclined to believe the woman because she has nothing to gain from the allegations.

Both women gave detailed accounts of Rice molesting them over the years at his homes. He lived in the Brownstown, Crothersville, Shieldstown and Vallonia areas during the time of the alleged molestations, according to the woman.

The first victim told police she and others confronted Rice about the allegations more than a year ago. She said he first denied them but apologized about a month later.

There is no statute of limitations in Indiana for high-level felonies, including Class A, Level 1 and Level 2.

Rice was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 12:54 p.m. Thursday and was being held without bond.

He was charged under the former felony classification because the alleged incidents took place prior to 2014 when the classifications changed. A Class A felony carries a sentence of 20 to 50 years if convicted.
