God will share his wisdom if you ask

We have been thinking of ways to grow in wisdom. Do you want more wisdom?

God says all you have to do is ask. The prayer for wisdom will be answered with a yes every time. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5)

As a parent, I was always convinced that I knew more than my kids. When they were really young, they believed it, too. Then there were those years when they began to think they knew more than me.

I am still convinced that I know a little more than my kids do, even though they are all adults now. That is not because I am smarter than them. It is not that I have a better education or a higher IQ than they do. It is just that I have been around a lot longer than they have.

Laurie and I are doing our best to be low-maintenance parents. We want to be low-maintenance in-laws. This is what our kids secretly want. It is what we wanted when we were their age.

Being low maintenance means we have a lot of ideas and opinions, but until we’re asked, we’re not going to share any of this great wisdom with our kids. That is our goal. I must be honest, we have not been 100 percent successful.

Here is what I want you to see. The moment one of my grown children sincerely solicits wisdom and asks what I think about a certain decision, I will gladly unleash every bit of wisdom I can muster up on them.

I assume you would do the same. So when you ask God to share his wisdom with you, do you think he will do it? Of course, he will.

Some of the ways we can be exposed to God’s wisdom is through his Word, from other believers or by sensing the inner impressions of his spirit. After all, he is the good shepherd who guides his sheep.

Since God guides, it is our job to follow, but you have to spend time with him to receive wisdom from him. The Psalmist reminds us, “The Lord says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.’” (Psalm 32:8) He may not tell you exactly what to do every time, but he will give you wisdom to decide.
