Seymour’s baseball team had its four-game win streak snapped by Columbus North, 4-3 at American Legion Field on Thursday afternoon.

Owls Coach Jeremy Richey said he felt like his team gave one way that should have gone into the win column.

“I’m disappointed. It’s a 4-3 game against a Top 10 team in Indiana. I don’t think we played very well at all. We looked pretty bad defensively (4 errors) and walked too many people (5) on the mound, and part of that may be the frustration from the errors.

“You can’t beat somebody walking as many people as we did and having that many errors,” he said.

The BullDogs, 10-1 and ranked No. 6 in the state, took advantage of three Seymour errors to score two unearned runs in the top of the fourth.

The Owls came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Bret Perry started the rally by reaching first base safely on an error by the North second baseman.

He then stole second and third, and scored on a booming triple to center by Jack Pennington. Pennington scored when Mikey Wright hit a ground ball to third that was errored.

With his steals, Perry becomes Seymour’s career leader in steals with 54. His brother, Alan held the old record. Bret also holds the school marks for runs and hits, and is tied for career walks.

Richey said, “He’s done a great job. The word for Bret is ‘consistency’. Every year the numbers stay about the same and they’re all really good.”

Bret Perry will play baseball at the University of Indianapolis beginning next year.

North bunched three hits and a sacrifice fly together in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Aaron Holt led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, and advanced on hits by Perry and Brady Harpe. Pennington hit a ball into short right field. The ball was caught, but the North second baseman and right fielder collided and both fell to the ground and laid motionless for a couple minutes while Seymour trainer Kyle Coates attended to them.

Holt scored on the play and both North players stayed in the game.

The Owls finished with five hits with Pennington having the triple, sacrifice fly, two RBIs and one run scored.

Seymour had only one hit going into the sixth inning.

“We know we struggled to hit. We found the barrel a little there at the end,” Richey said. “If we’re not going to hit it very well we’ve got to be a lot better defensively if we’re going to win games like this.”

Holt, Perry, Pennington, Harpe and Parker Thompson had one hit apiece, and the other starters were a combined 0-for-11. Richey said, “That is our biggest issue right now. Lefties seem to be our problem. We’ve not hit a lefty very well all year.

“We’ve got to get more production because it seems like right now the only players we’re getting a lot of production from are the three seniors with Jack, Bret and Gavin (Leavy). When one of those guys has an off night we’re in trouble.

“We’ve got to find a way to build some confidence and have some more guys getting some things done at the plate.”

Leavy pitched the first five innings and allowed five hits, two earned runs, he walked five and struck out seven. Harpe pitched two innings and had one strike out and gave up one hit..

The Owls, 10-3, will travel to Brownstown Central Tuesday afternoon.
