Mikey Wright and Gavin leavy combined for a no-hitter to lead the Seymour baseball team to a 5-0 win Tuesday night over visiting Silver Creek at American Legion Field.

Wright pitched the first five innings with four strikeouts and five walks. Leavy pitched the final two innings and had four strikeouts and no walks.

Owls coach Jeremy Richey said his pitchers threw well.

“The one error is the only thing I can say bad about us defensively, and offensively we had some big hits,” he said.

“We didn’t have a lot of hits (five), but (Preston) Burton returning we knew it was going to be a battle, and for the first five innings it was.”

Silver Creek won the Class 3A state championship last year and Burton pitched that championship game and beat Andrean.

Seymour scored two runs in the first inning and three in the sixth.

With one out in the fifth, Jack Pennington hit a triple over the right fielder’s head.

Bret Perry hit a ground ball to the shortstop who threw low to first base and when the throw skipped past the first baseman Pennington scored.

Leavy followed with a double that easily scored Perry.

Brady Harpe led off the sixth inning with a double into left-center. He moved to third when the Dragons tried to pick him off second but threw the ball into center field.

Perry followed with a single, and Leavy hit the Owls first homer of the season, over the right field fence and up against the tennis courts.

The first four batters combined for all the runs, hits and RBIs.

“Our guys that didn’t get hits had some good at bats,” Richey said. “The offense is coming along. That’s the power we can generate, and especially the top of the lineup.

“We’ve got some guys that are going to hit it, but it was a rough day if you look at the number of hits, but offensively I thought we did a pretty good job against somebody that is one of the best pitchers in southern Indiana. We had some that were not very good at bats, but we had some that were not very good at bats.

Richey said the Owls had some strikeouts on some awful swings, trying to pull out with two strikes.

“We’ve got to be better than that,” he said. “We’ve got to have better plate discipline from some of the guys.”

The Owls walked two times and struck out six.

The error Richey was referring to came in the third inning when Jack Murphy tried to bunt for a hit. He popped the ball up and Owl’s catcher Tylan Nicholson dove and tried to make the catch, but the ball hit the ground.

Nicholson threw out three Silver Creek runners trying to steal.

Seymour will play at Lanesville Saturday morning.

Seymour’s junior varsity won 4-1 at Hauser. Max Coates and Miller Claycamp each had two hits.
