Owls fall 47-0 to Panthers; Prepare for Olympians in two weeks

BLOOMINGTON — It was a rainy evening in Bloomington on Friday night.

Seymour traveled to face off with the Bloomington South Panthers to finish the regular season. The Owls fell to the Panthers 47-0, falling to 5-4 on the season.

Owls head coach Tyson Moore spoke about the outcome with the Panthers.

“We definitely got humbled tonight. They schemed up a lot of great plays against us,” Moore said. “They played better in every aspect. It was a disappointing way to end the regular season, but we will have to regroup for the sectional matchup.”

Seymour started off on offense, completing a few passes to get into rhythm. The team would be forced to punt around midfield, giving the ball to the Panthers.

The Owls defense held Bloomington to a field goal on their first drive, giving the early 3-0 lead to the Panthers. Bloomington then forced the Owls to turn the ball over on downs.

South then scored a touchdown. Gavin Adams broke loose to score an 8-yard rushing touchdown.

Seymour then punted the ball back to the Panthers after another offensive drive. Bloomington added another field goal to take a 13-0 lead. Kicker Bryce Taylor hit his career-long 43-yarder for the Panthers to extend the lead.

The Owls had trouble on offense getting anything going after the somewhat successful first drive. After the Owls came back on defense, Bloomington pinned Seymour inside the 5 at the 2.

The Owls then gave Nicholas Wheeler the ball, who ran the ball to the 25, sparking the Seymour offense for the time being. Bloomington forced Seymour to punt again, giving the Panthers the ball again.

It was the fifth time they punted in the first 20 minutes. For context, the Owls had only punted 17 times coming into the game all season.

It was tough sledding for Seymour, dealing with tough field position throughout the game. Seymour was then forced to punt again, giving the Panthers the ball one final time in the first half.

A critical third down penalty for the Owls allowed Bloomington to have a manageable 3rd-and-4.

Evan Royer blew the third-down play up. He was critical throughout the game for the Owls up front.

The Panthers then got the first down on the fourth down play. South QB Jarrin Alley then found Lucas Walden for a touchdown to extend the lead to 20. The first half then ended.

The second half began with Bloomington marching right down the field to add to the lead, making it 27-0 with 10 minutes to go in the third quarter.

The Owls started moving the ball down the field, completing passes left and right.

Perry then made a mistake with an interception to Adrian Rame. Seymour picked up a personal foul penalty on the turnover, setting Bloomington back up for another score.

Another penalty was called on Seymour for a horse collar, putting the Panthers in scoring position. Bloomington’s Deandre Black caught the score, making it a 33-0 game. It was not Seymour’s night, and it was evident from the beginning of the game.

Walden then returned the punt for South, racking up a 47-yard touchdown. Perry then threw another interception with Miles Mckay ending up in the end zone for a pick-6. The game went to running clock with no other scores happening throughout the finish.

Seymour will now prepare for sectional at Columbus East High School on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.

Moore spoke on the postseason matchup with the Olympians.

“Our biggest message to the guys is that this is the final one,” he said. “There are no more second chances. You either win and advance or lose and go home. We will have to be on our game if we want to continue playing.”
