Seymour hosted week five opponent Bedford North Lawrence on Friday at Bulleit Stadium, looking for it’s third win of the season. The Owls and Stars battled back and forth in the first half, ending at a 14-14.

Unfortunately, Bedford North Lawrence would take control in the second half and held on to win, 36-28. The loss was the third of the season for the Owls.

“They played great defense and skimmed us pretty well,” Owls head coach Tyson Moore said. “We took a lot of what they left open and we couldn’t get the job done. We got outplayed and when it came down to it, we didn’t make enough plays to win the game.”

BNL got the ball to start the first half, getting their first play blown up by the Owls defense. Shortly after, Stars QB Memphis Louden broke loose from the pocket and ran for a 60 yard touchdown, giving BNL the early 7-0 lead.

Owls Quarterback Bret Perry then did something he had yet to do all season, throw an interception. Perry was picked off by Maddox Ray, but the Seymour defense held their own, getting the ball back to the offense.

After a long drive that consisted of a 27 yard reception by Jaylan Johnson, Seymour found the endzone when Logan Shelly took a 12 yard rushing touchdown to the house. Bedford got the ball back, but a drop forced by the Owls defense forced the Stars to punt.

Perry then led the offense down the field, hitting Kyle Hileman for a huge completion on the sideline to extend the drive. Perry then picked up 13 yards with his legs to put the Owls in the red zone. Seymour got their touchdown when Perry threw a corner ball to Jack Pennington, who soared and snagged the ball for the touchdown.

The throw gave Seymour a 13-7 lead, but Bedford had other ideas, after Louden threw a dime to Ryker Hughes to tie the game up with 9 minutes left in the first half.

Tyler Webb of Bedford then picked off Perry on the next possession. The linebacker swatted the ball in the air and then picked it off for the Stars. The ball would be knocked free, but Bedford recovered.

Pennington then proceeded to have his “I’m Him” moment, snagging an interception with one hand in the end zone. The play saved a possible touchdown for the Stars. Seymour would take that drive down to the 1 yard line, but couldn’t cash in, falling short on a 4th down rushing attempt from Jaylan Johnson.

Bedford got the ball back, but couldn’t score, leaving the game tied at 14 heading into halftime.

“Traditionally we’ve had a lot of success running the football against them,” Moore added. “We thought we could have more success on the ground, and they made enough stops to get the win. They capitilized and we didn’t, its that simple. Turning the ball over killed us.”

Kicking off the second half with the ball was Seymour, marching down for a touchdown to take the lead. Owls’ Perry threw a lob pass to Pennington who tip-toed to the end zone, missing defenders and taking the lead again at 21-14.

Seymour regained possession after a huge stop, but would then be stopped by the Stars.

Bedford then seized momentum, and scored three of the final four touchdowns for either side. Running back Kyle Gates scored on a three-yard rushing touchdown with 45 seconds left in the third quarter to tie it back up at 21.

Stars QB Louden then found the end zone with his legs, scoring on a seven-yard rushing touchdown. Seymour then scored on one play, thanks to a 62 yard touchdown pass to Logan Shelly from Bret Perry. Louden then found Gates for a 52 yard receiving touchdown, taking the lead for the final time.

The two-point conversion was successful for the Stars in taking a 36-28 lead. Seymour would not be able to respond and lost the game by eight points.

On the final drive, Perry hit Hileman to the right, before he lateralled the ball to Shelly, who picked up another 15 yards.

The trickery had the Owls marching down the field with 50 seconds left. Seymour was then forced to 4th and 5 on the 27 yard line with 41 seconds to go and the game on the line, the Owls took a timeout.

The ball would be overthrown and fell incomplete, securing the win for the Stars. Seymour will now prepare to face Brownstown Central in the Jackson Bowl next Friday at Bulleit Stadium in Seymour. Moore is seeing some positives from the loss.

“Our defense showed up and played better,” he said. “Hopefully we can take this and use it as a silver lining into next week against Brownstown Central.”
