Dr. Charles Francis Wolter, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home on August 8, 2023. He was 76 years old. Born on May 24, 1947 in Seymour, Indiana he was the son of Charles Francis and Mary Euphamia Shelton Wolter, both deceased.

On January 26, 1969 in Redeemer Lutheran Church in Seymour, Indiana he married his wife of 54 years, Sharon Ann Hinnefeld Wolter who survives. Charlie and Sharon were blessed with two children; Jennifer Marie Wolter of Indianapolis who survives and Charles Frederick Wolter who is deceased.

He graduated from Seymour High School with the class of 1965. In 1969 he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University. And in 1973 earned his Medical Doctor degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. His Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine as well as his Fellowship in Digestive Disease and Nutrition were all completed at the University of Louisville Hospitals where he also served as Chief Resident. While at the University of Louisville he contributed to medical literature by co-authoring various scientific papers. In 1978 he received the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Department of Medicine at the University of Louisville. Also in 1978 he opened his private practice in Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in Seymour, Indiana which he continued until his retirement in 2012.

Dr. Wolter was a 50 year member of the Indiana State Medical Association. He was also a member of the American Gastroenterologic Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He was Board Certified in Internal Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology, and a recipient of the American Medical Association Physicians Recognition Award for Continuing Medical Education.

Dr. Wolter was a member of the Jackson Lodge #146 Free and Accepted Masons, the Columbus York Rite, Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite and the Murat Shrine. Additionally, he was a member of The Columbia Club, the Indiana Landmarks Foundation, The Filson Historical Society, and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. Dr. Wolter was also a distinguished Sagamore of the Wabash.

Dr. Wolter was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ and of Trinity United Methodist Church.

In his spare time Charlie enjoyed cultivating trees and ornamental plants. He also shared his father’s passion for collecting time pieces and antiques.

Additional survivors include brothers Stephen Edward Wolter (Cathy) of Fishers, IN, Jeffrey Wayne Wolter (Patty) of Fishers, IN, a sister Helen Maria Mehm (Dr. John) of Los Angeles, CA, and a brother-in-law Dean Weasner (Peggy) of Greenwood, IN as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son and a sister, Mary Jo Weasner.

Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 – 8:00 pm Monday, August 14, 2023 and one hour prior to the service at 11:00 am Tuesday at Burkholder Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes, 419 N. Chestnut Street, Seymour, Indiana. the Jackson Lodge #146 Free and Accepted Masons will conduct funeral rites at 7:30 pm Monday. Interment will take place in Riverview Cemetery.

Memorials may be given through Burkholder Chapel to the Charles Frederick Wolter Memorial Scholarship Fund or to the donor’s choice.
