The Seymour girls tennis team advanced to the Hoosier Hills Conference championship match after defeating Jeffersonville 3-2 at home on Wednesday evening.

The Red Devils beat Jennings County on Tuesday, while Seymour drew a bye, and the Owls were pleased to come away with the win.

“It was good. We knew it was going to be a tough,” head coach Brandon Davis said. “Jeff is always a good team, so it was good to start us off and get our momentum going.”

The 3-2 score was a little less stressful than it might seem on paper as Seymour got the first three points to clinch the match.

“It means a lot that we were able to get those, relax and move on and take some pressure off the positions that aren’t off the court yet,” Davis said.

The No. 2 doubles team of Ava Sunbury and Addison Hunsley were off the court first with a 6-3, 6-4 win.

“Two doubles played great,” Davis said. “They’re connective right now and know where each other are. They are aggressive at the net and just being very smart about how they’re playing.”

Next off the court was Brooke Schafstall at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-2, and shortly after Schafstall, Elise Hartung wrapped up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.

“Brooke knows how to handle her business, and Elise always stays calm, cool and collected,” Davis said. “I know if I see either one of them stressed, that’s kind of when I mosey over there. But they handled their business, they come in and do their jobs.”

Claire Combs lost 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 singles, and Caroline Thompson and Jessica Hougland lost 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 1 doubles.

Up next, the Owls (12-2) will take on a tough New Albany team in the conference championship on Friday at Seymour.

The Owls have not yet seen the Bulldogs this season, but New Albany beat Seymour in the HHC title game last season. Seymour is excited for the opportunity to match up against them.

“They’re excited. New Albany is a tough team, they’ve played well all season, so we’re excited to see how we stack up against them,” Davis said. “We’re pulling for that win. Our girls are excited and ready to go.”
