BROWNSTOWN — The Brownstown Central boys track and field team was able to perform at a high level on Thursday night to defeat Jennings County and Columbus East.

The Braves had a team score of 64, which edged out the Panthers who had 63.5. The Olympians scored 39.5.

Shane Ratliff and Chance Ratliff went first and second in the 1600 with times of 4:44.8 and 4:47.6, respectively, which were both personal bests for the two sophomores.

Then later in the meet, the twins reversed order. Chance won the two mile in 10:24.0, and Shane was second in 10:25.7.

“I knew we were running against two really tough schools, so we had to come into this meet and really give it our all,” Shane said.

Chance, who was sporting bright green spikes on his feet, thought the new additions helped his speed.

“This meet definitely showed my improvement,” he said. “I think the new spikes helped, as well.”

The brothers like the fact they can pace off one another in each event. Shane is the better miler, while Chance is the better two-miler, and the two help each other in each event.

“It’s really good. He really pushes me to my limits,” Shane said. “He’s got the upper hand on me in the two mile. We really push each other.”

Both Chance and Shane want to break 4:40 in the mile and 10 minutes in the two mile as the season goes on.

Other top three finishers for the Brownstown boys featured Caleb Cummings winning the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches. Cummings and teammate Jack Pace also went 1-2 in the 200 with times of 23.34 and 23.48, respectively.

Garrett Driver won the 400 with a time of 52.06, and Bradley Edwards was second in the 800 at 2:11.95.

Hudson Fritz was third in the 100 in 11.47. Aden McCrary tied for second in pole vault with Columbus East’s Austin Menefee with a vault of 8-6. Jaden Disque and Isaac Hutchinson went 2-3 in discus with throws of 123-3 and 113-0, respectively, and Ryan Branaman was second in shot put at 41-11.

In the girls meet, Columbus East won with a score of 68, Jennings County was second at 59 and Brownstown third at 40.

Camryn Thompson won the 300 hurdles in 48.14 and was second in the 100 hurdles in 16.76. Hailey Bair won the long jump for BC at 15-6.

Jocelyn Love was third in the 100 hurdles at 17.85, Maddy Schepman was third in the 100 with a time of 13.67 and Liberty Wilkins was third in high jump at 4-6. Claire Schepman and Tori Lokey both vaulted 6 feet in pole vault to place second and third, respectively. Olivia Fritz was third in shot put at 29-2 and second in discus at 92-2.

The Brownstown girls and boys both won the 4×100 relay.
