Seymour police release information about scam

The Seymour Police Department is making the public aware of a scam that is occurring in Seymour.

A victim recently was contacted by telephone and told their grandchild had been arrested. The scammer advised the victim they needed a large amount of money. The victim then withdrew the money from the bank.

The scammer contacted the victim back and told them they could pick the money up for an additional fee of $45, but they would need a credit card number for the fee. The victim then provided the scammer with their credit card information.

While on the phone with the scammer, an individual came to the door to pick up the money. The person picking up the money did not say anything, just the scammer on the phone. The victim described the person picking up the money as dressed almost like a police officer but without a badge. The individual also had on a white surgical type of mask. The person picking up the money then got into a black or dark-colored vehicle and left.

“The Seymour Police Department would like the public to be on guard if they receive any phone calls asking for money or credit card information,” Lt. C.J. Foster said in a news release.
