Flood warning issued for East Fork White River

UPDATED AT 1:50 p.m. Friday to reflect new rainfall total

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the East Fork White River.

The warning, in effect until 4:45 p.m. today, covers a portion of south central Indiana, including Jackson, Brown, Lawrence and Monroe counties.

Excessive rain is expected to cause flooding of rivers, creeks, stream and other low-lying and flood-prone areas.

By 2 p.m. today, 2.53 inches of rain had fallen over the past 24 hours, according to the Southern Indiana Weather Station, located southeast of Brownstown near Wegan. More rain is anticipated throughout the afternoon.

The weather service is forecasting the East Fork White River at Rockford is expected to rise above 15 feet by Saturday morning and reach 16 feet on Monday before gradually falling. The river is not expected to fall below flood stage (12 feet) until sometime late Tuesday.

At 16 feet, extensive lowland flooding is affecting agricultural lands, and many county and state roads in the floodplain become impassable by high water. Those roads include State Road 235 east of Medora, State Road 258 east of Cortland, County Road 725N and possibly State Road 39 south of Tampico.

High water affects county roads near Vallonia and Shields, Ewing Road near Brownstown, County Road 525N near Seymour’s wastewater treatment plant, Honeytown Road and possibly State Road 25 east of Dudleytown.
