Seymour’s win streak stalls in home loss to North Daviess

With 6:10 remaining in the third quarter Friday night, Seymour’s Bret Perry hit a 3-point shot that left Seymour trailing North Daviess 36-29 in the Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium and gave Owl fans hopes for their fifth straight win.

However, Cougar senior Lance Wilson and his teammates had other ideas. Wilson hit back-to-back 3-pointers and teammate Jaylen Mullin added another basket from beyond the arc, and the lead quickly spread to 16 points, and that left the Owls with too big of a hill to climb.

The Cougars held a 49-33 lead going into the fourth period and finished strong by outscoring the Owls 18-8 to go home with a 67-41 win.

Seymour head coach Kirk Manns said teamwork is what makes North Daviess a good ball club.

“They are a physical team, they do a good job of running their offense and they make open shots,” he said. “They put five good players on the floor.”

The Cougars (18-5) shot 7-for-7 in the third quarter and 26-for-38 for the game. The Owls shot 22-of-42 overall.

North Daviess opened up a 10-4 lead after four minutes of play before Charlie Longmeier hit a 3-pointer and Michael Brooks and Landon Fritsch added deuces later in the period to make it a 16-11 lead for the visitors going into the second period.

After Bret Perry scored early in the second period for the Owls, the Cougars went on a 9-0 run to take a 25-13 lead.

The Owls then had their best offensive stretch of the night by outscoring the Cougars 13-7 with Perry leading the way with eight points in the quarter.

Seymour’s offense cooled off in the fourth quarter with just eight points.

Perry topped the Owls with 11 points, and Eli Meyer topped the Owls in rebounds with five.

Manns complimented Mullin with doing a good job of running the North Daviess offense, as he topped the Cougars with 17 points. Mullin also had nine rebounds to help the Cougars to a 23-18 advantage.

Manns also said the Wilsons, Logan and Lance, did a good job in North Daviess’ offensive flow. Lance made four 3-pointers and had 21 points, while Logan had two 3-pointers and scored 13.

Two senior members of the North Daviess team are Brenden and Braden Stickles, who combined for 12 points. They are two-thirds of a set of triplets and are the sons of former Seymour High School athlete and Seymour Firefighter Doug Stickles and the grandsons of former Seymour assistant basketball coach Dick Stickles.

The Owls (8-12) will continue their four-game homestand to close the regular season next week, hosting Shelbyville Tuesday night and Silver Creek Friday night.
