Coffee brewing class picks up steam; more coming soon

Humble Joe’s Coffee is partnering with Kay’s Kafe in Brownstown to offer Coffee Experience 101 for those who want to learn more about the art of coffee brewing.

The class will be Feb. 25 at Kay’s Kafe, 214 S. Sugar St., Suite 1.

While tickets are already sold out for this upcoming event, more classes will be coming in early spring.

Humble Joe’s started in February 2022 by Justin and Lauren Earl as a home-based vendor and coffee company wanting to bring freshly roasted coffee from around the world to the community.

With Humble Joe’s supplying the coffee, Kay’s Kafe will provide the space for the class. Kaylee Branaman opened Kay’s Kafe in 2022 when she was only 20 years old.

“As a small business, getting local support is so important,” Earl said.

The class will entail an overview of the science behind coffee and the process of roasting coffee with expert roaster Justin Earl, owner of Humble Joe’s Coffee.

Participants will learn about coffee harvesting, roasting and brewing, all variables that go together to make a steaming cup of coffee.

Participants also will have the opportunity to do a “cupping,” which is known as a tasting session to describe the many nuances, such as the type of brew or flavor.

This class also will engage participants in learning different methods of brewing coffee in a hands-on experience. Participants will learn three different methods, the French Press, AeroPress and the pour over method.

“The French Press is a simple way to brew coffee bringing a rich and bold taste to the cup,” Earl said.

The French Press method starts out by submerging the coffee in hot water and letting the coffee become saturated. Then the coffee grounds will be “pressed” in a container known as a carafe.

The pour over method is used by manually pouring hot water over coffee grounds in a filter, creating a smooth and bright color of coffee.

“This method enhances the flavor and aroma by maximizing the rate of coffee extraction,” Earl said.

The AeroPress is another manual coffee brewing method that consists of a cylindrical chamber and a plunger similar to a syringe. Ground coffee goes inside with hot water and then forced through a filter by pressing the plunger.

“You can brew a highly concentrated coffee with this method espresso style or with just regular coffee,” Earl said.

Participants will have the opportunity to make their own espresso drink by using the espresso machine and brewing method.

Once the class is finished, participants will be able to take home a bag of Humble Joe’s Coffee to use the skills they learned.

While tickets for this class are already sold out, Earl hopes to bring more classes in the spring and see the community come together through the beauty of coffee.
