Winter storm creates havoc for motorists

A winter storm that moved through Jackson County late Monday night into early Tuesday morning led to reports of more than two dozen wrecks.

The storm, which left behind a mixture of sleet and ice and a thin layer of snow, also led Seymour Community Schools to implement an eLearning day. Brownstown Central, Crothersville and Medora schools were closed, while Trinity Lutheran High School operated on a two-hour delay.

Some of the most serious wrecks were reported on Interstate 65 in the eastern part of the county late Monday. By 4 a.m. Tuesday, Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the Indiana State Police reported road conditions seemed to have improved over the past couple of hours as crews had been able to put salt down.

“A light sleet/snow continues to fall,” said Wheeles, who is the public information officer for the Versailles Post.

“I observed that side streets and rural roads remain very slick since many of those areas have not been plowed or treated yet,” he said at the time.

Wheeles also advised motorists to drive cautiously if they were heading out on the roads this morning.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department received reports of more than a half-dozen wrecks, including three involving personal injury on Interstate 65 overnight. A fourth personal injury wreck was reported in the 900 block of East U.S. 50 in the Brownstown area.

The Indiana State Police investigated a wreck involving a semitrailer that had jackknifed while traveling northbound on I-65 near the 51 mile marker at about 1 a.m. Tuesday. The semitrailer, which was off the roadway, spilled its load at the entrance to the northbound weigh station, said Trooper Gary Thalls, who was investigating the crash.

Also, at 11:45 p.m. Monday, the northbound lanes of I-65 were closed near the 46 mile marker because of a crash involving multiple vehicles, including several semitrailers. By 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, that wreck, investigated by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, had been cleaned up and the interstate had been reopened, Wheeles reported.

Seymour police also investigated five storm-related wrecks overnight.
