Hehman, Braves set school 3-point record in MSC win

BROWNSTOWN — Parker Hehman and his Brownstown Central teammates showed the Corydon Panthers and fans at The Pit why they are one of the best perimeter shooting high school teams around Saturday night.

Hehman broke the single game 3-point record with 12, and the Braves made 22-of-38 from beyond the arc for a team record as the Braves rolled to an 84-53 Mid-Southern Athletic Conference win. This is the fourth game in a row that the Braves have scored in the 80s.

Hehman broke the old record of 11 3s set by Jack Benter last year. The old mark for 3s in a game was 17, and that number was reached three times.

Hehman, a junior, shot 12-for-16 with his index and ring finger on his right (shooting) taped. That injury forced him to miss six games from mid-December through early January. He made his first 3-point attempt of the game at 2:55 of the first period.

He missed his next two shots before connecting on back-to-back threes in the second period. He made both of his attempts in the second quarter, shot 5-for-5 from long range in the third quarter and stretched his consecutive shots made mark to nine in the fourth.

Hehman, who finished with a career-high 36 points said, “I kind of felt good coming into it. They put it to us last year, and we did not like the feeling of that, so I was feeling pretty good before the game.”

“Just before halftime I hit one from the top of the key and I really started feeling pretty good,” he said. “(The record) feels pretty good. I didn’t really realize how many I had until the end. I hope next week Jack can come out and break my record and get 13.”

Seven different Braves shared in the record as Chace Coomer made five, and Benter, Colby Hall, Jakob Arthur, Micah Sheffer, and Caiden Gwin had one apiece.

The Braves made four 3s in the first period, three in the second, six in the third and nine in the fourth.

Brownstown had 23 assists on its 30 field goals with Benter having 10.

Coach Dave Benter said, “We worked a lot of time in practice on box-and-one and triangle-and-two stuff, and just have second guys running at Jack. We feel like we’ve got enough shooters, and our guys are unselfish enough that it’s not just that first pass out of Jack’s hand. We can make that second pass and get whatever shot we want. Parker, going into the game, was shooting close to 50 percent from the three.”

“I think Chace Coomer is shooting around 55 percent,” Benter said. “We’re going to live with those guys shooting ‘horse’ shots. All of a sudden Parker hit a couple shots. Obviously, he played extremely well.”

Benter scored seven points and Coomer made two 3s in the opening period to help the Braves to an 18-11 lead. Hehman made two 3s and Sheffer scored five points in the second quarter when the Braves increased their lead to 31-19 at the half.

Benter finished with 17 points and Coomer scored 15.

The win increased the Braves’ MSC record to 7-0 and assured them of at least a share of the conference title. Their remaining MSC game is Feb. 17 at home against Eastern.

Brownstown (13-4) will travel to Columbus East Thursday night.

Hehman said, “I feel like everybody is happy to have everybody back. We kind of got it going (8-10 at the beginning of the year and then we had some injuries. If felt like new people every week, and now we’re getting everybody back, getting our confidence, and we’re playing as a team, playing pretty well together.”

“We’re starting to defend a lot better. I think we’ve got it rolling at the right time. I hit a lot of 3s but my teammates stepped up, too.”
