Benter breaks scoring record in home game versus Jennings County

BROWNSTOWN — With 7:09 left in the second quarter, Colby Hall lobbed a pass over Darius Thomas to get it to Jack Benter.

Benter caught it, turned and went up over Parker Elmore to score his fourth point of Friday night’s contest against Jennings County.

But it wasn’t just Benter’s fourth point. That basket made him the all-time leading scorer in Brownstown Central High School history with 1,395 points.

Benter broke the record of John Reid, who who graduated in 1970 with 1,394 career points. Friday’s game was briefly stopped after the basket so Benter’s achievement could be announced to the sold out crowd inside The Pit, and the Brave received a standing ovation from everyone in attendance.

“I hadn’t really thought about it until I was talking to another head coach earlier this week, and we talked about not even stopping the game,” head coach Dave Benter said. “He scolded me and said you understand this does not happen very often. We had to give Jack his due. This record has stood for over 50 years, and it’s something that after his playing career he’ll look back and it’ll be a special moment.”

Jack said he had no idea that he was even close to the record. He thought he had a chance to break it at some point this season, but he didn’t know he was only four points away.

“I was kind of shocked,” Jack said. “They stopped the game and once they announced it, it was shocking to me. It’s neat, but you just have to keep going, and I still have another year.”

The driven junior guard and Purdue commit was more focused about the outcome of Friday’s game than he was about the record.

Jennings County came in undefeated, and it showed why for a reason. The Panthers held Benter to his lowest point total on the season at 13 points — he now has 1,404 in his career.

Benter was averaging 30.6 on the season, and the Panthers took advantage winning the game 78-69 to stay undefeated at 11-0 this season.

“We played well, we just had a couple lapses on defense and they got hot,” Jack said. “We just dug ourselves a hole.”

Brownstown led 18-15 at the end of the first quarter after Chace Coomer and Colby Hall paced the Braves with six points apiece.

Coomer was red hot in the first half, nailing four 3-pointers to lead Brownstown with 15 points in the opening 16 minutes.

The Braves got up by double digits in the second quarter, but then Jennings County went on a 12-0 run, featuring 3-pointers from Carter Kent and Elmore to give the Panthers the lead back.

Coomer hit two free throws to tie the game at 35, and then Keegan Manowitz converted an and-one with 0.7 seconds left in the first half to give the Panthers a 38-35 lead at the break.

“In the first half, we made shots,” Dave Benter said. “This is not a team you want to get behind on, and we got behind 11 or 13.”

Jennings County kept it going in the third quarter, outscoring the Braves 19-11 in the frame to take an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Panthers extended it to as much as 14 in the fourth, and Brownstown worked to get the deficit down to seven at one point, but it was too little too late as JC held on for the 9-point victory.

Manowitz led the Panthers with 21 points, Elmore scored 17 and Carter Kent had 15.

For Brownstown, in addition to Benter’s 13, Coomer finished with a team-high 22, Hall scored 15, Micah Sheffer had 10 and Carson Darlage had nine.

“I told Chace it was the best varsity game he’s had,” coach Benter said. “Not just scoring but he also had six rebounds and three assists. That’s the Chace Coomer we need. With them doubling Jack and leaving guys, we felt before the game he would get some opportunities, and he capitalized.”

The Braves are still without starting guard Parker Hehman, who broke his finger and is still out of action. Despite being vocal on the bench, Hehman’s presence is still missed on the floor.

“We really miss him,” Benter said. “There’s so many things he does for us. He guards the other team’s best guard, he initiates offense, he’s our most vocal guy. He’s a really good basketball player.”

Benter said they hope Hehman can get his cast off next week and work his way to getting back on the floor sooner rather than later for the Braves.

The Braves are now 9-3 this season and will host Mid-Southern Conference foe Silver Creek next Friday night at home.
