Brownstown wins Toby Yoho Classic

For the second straight season, the Brownstown Central girls basketball team won the Toby Yoho Classic at Eastern Greene.

The Braves won two games on Thursday to win Pool B, and they started Friday by taking on undefeated North Knox, who was ranked No. 1 in Class 2A. Brownstown was able to give the Warriors their first loss by beating them 31-30 to advance to the championship game against Jasper.

Brownstown fell down 14-7 early against Jasper, but the Braves made a run to keep things close in the first half.

Jenna Klosterman hit two 3-pointers at the end of the third quarter to give Brownstown a three point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Braves then went on a 8-2 run to start the fourth quarter to get their largest lead at nine. Jasper tried to make a run late, but Brownstown was able to do enough to secure the 42-38 victory.

Maddy Hackman and Klosterman both scored 10 points to lead the way for the Braves against Jasper. Kalee Borden and Kelsey Schneider each had four points in the contest.

Brownstown is now 12-4 this season and will play at Madison on Tuesday night.

Trinity loses two tight games

The Trinity Lutheran girls basketball team had two close losses on Friday to finish fourth place at the Toby Yoho Classic at Eastern Greene.

After the Cougars won Pool C on Thursday, they took on Jasper in the semifinals on Friday afternoon. Jasper was able to hold off a late run by Trinity to win the game 39-37.

Bailey Tabeling scored 21 to lead the Cougars against Jasper, followed by Madison Keith with 12 and Jordan Brewer with four.

Then Trinity took on North Knox in the third place game, and the Cougars had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but couldn’t get a clean shot off and lost 58-55.

Tabeling had 26 in this game, Keith scored 11, Brewer had 10 and Liza Froedge scored eight.

Trinity is now 13-3 this season and will be at home on Thursday against West Washington.

Boys basketball

Seymour beats Martinsville

The Seymour boys basketball team defeated Martinsville 50-43 on Friday night inside Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium.

It was Seymour’s second win of the season, and the Owls’ first victory at home this year.

Landon Fritsch and Jaylan Johnson led Seymour in scoring with 10 points apiece. Bret Perry scored nine, Ethan Silcox had eight, Charlie Longmeier scored five, Cory Robinson had four, and Eli Meyer and Michael Brooks each had two points.

Seymour will look to keep it rolling in 2023 as the Owls play next Friday night at home against Charlestown.

Wrestling

Owls compete at Mooresville

The Seymour wrestling team competed in the Holiday Classic at Mooresville High School on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

Carmel won the tournament with 293 points, and Seymour was able to finish 30th with 43 team points.

Ricky Bogard earned the Owls 10 team points by placing eighth in the 120-pound weight class. Bogard won by fall over Edgewood’s Cayleb Sides, he won in sudden victory over Lebanon’s Niko Trepcos, and he won by fall over McCutcheon’s Austin Standefer.

Jesus Aguilar also scored 10 points for the Owls at 285. Aguilar won by fall over Mooresville’s Levi Hopkins, he won by fall over Yorktown’s Isaiah Hopkins and won by fall over Cascade’s Cyle Sullivan.

Liam Chandler got three points for the Owls by getting a win by fall over Bloomington North’s Kanye Roberts-Gray at 126. Chase Rogers scored four points for Seymour, winning by forfeit at 138.

Charlie Bruce got one win for Seymour in the 106-pound weight class, beating Castle’s Kostin Elpers via pinfall to score three points.

Nic Frady won two matches for the Owls, winning by fall over Evansville Central’s August Hale and winning by decision over Monrovia’s Emmanuel Akanle.

Briley Compton added five points for Seymour by winning decision over Southport’s Abel Mejia at 160. Compton also won by fall over Edgewood’s Christian Couch.

Logan Cunningham scored four team points by getting a fall over Southport’s Michael Vowell at 182. Brenden Bridgewater also scored four team points by winning by major decision over Southport’s Jay Johnson and winning by decision over Greenwood’s Gabe Folco at 220.

In the women’s part of the bracket, Seymour’s AnnMarie Shuler got to the championship match after receiving a bye and then getting a fall over Mooresville’s Peyton Nedelsky. Southport’s AnnaMae Mosconi was able to get a fall over Shuler to claim first place.

The Owls will compete again on Tuesday at home against Columbus North.
