Brownstown sweeps Charlestown to improve to 2-0 in MSC

After running out to “Narco,” a Timmy Trumpet song made famous by New York Mets’ closer Edwin Diaz, the Brownstown Central volleyball team made quick work of Charlestown at home on Tuesday night.

Much like how Diaz often retires the three batters he faces in the bottom of the ninth, the Braves were able to top the Pirates in three sets 25-18, 25-13, 25-19.

“It’s a conference win, and we’re excited about every win,” head coach Jennifer Shade said. “I’m starting to see more and more good things out of this team.”

Brownstown rallied off nine-straight points in the first set to take a 13-5 lead. It was 18-10 in favor of Brownstown before Charlestown went on a run to cut the lead to 19-15, and Shade called a timeout.

Brownstown was able to close out the set, but it started a theme of sloppy sequences that plagued the Braves throughout Tuesday’s contest.

Shade said it all comes down to having confidence and coming amped up to play.

“We just have to start playing with more confidence,” she said. We’re going to put the volleyball stuff outside and try to figure out how to get them pumped up to play, ready to play and get excited to come out and beat teams.”

The Braves recently wrapped up a tough two-week stretch of competition that featured teams like Providence, Floyd Central, New Albany, as well as tournaments at Bloomington South and Providence.

“Our hope is by playing by that class of teams and playing that competition, it makes it easier to go out and win when we play our class,” Shade said. “I feel like we learn a lot when we play. We learn serve-receive.”

Serve-receive is among the top things you hear coaches and players talk about when it comes to bettering their play on a volleyball court. That’s no different for Shade and the Braves.

“It’s the thing,” Shade said. “If you can’t pass, then you can’t make the set, the hit. It starts with the passers.”

As a team against Charlestown, the Braves hit 64-78 with 21 kills, and they served 63-73 with seven aces.

Kinzee Dean served 20-22, Finley Wheeler served 11-12 and Sophie Wischmeier served 8-9 with one ace.

Wischmeier also led the Braves in hitting, going 17-19 with seven kills. Kalee Borden went 13-16 with three kills and Dean went 11-11 with three kills.

Borden is Brownstown’s lone senior on the roster. There are eight underclassmen on Brownstown’s varsity roster, and four of those are freshmen.

Shade said she is seeing progress as the team continues to create chemistry with one another.

“We only have one senior, so that’s a lot on her shoulders,” Shade said. “We hope after each game, each kid keeps gaining confidence. There is a difference between 15 year olds and 18 year olds when you get out and play volleyball. We are working on building the confidence of those kids, and it’s happening.”

Tuesday’s win improved Brownstown’s Mid-Southern Conference record to 2-0 on the season. Before varsity took the floor, Brownstown’s JV team also got a win over Charlestown 25-8, 25-18.

Genna Preston led the team with 11 kills and five aces. Olivia Fritz had four aces and Paisleigh Peters had three aces. Haley Derringer and Kassidy Wischmeier each had two kills as well.

The Braves will have another big MSC match coming up at home this Thursday against Silver Creek. The JV match will begin at 6:30 with varsity to follow.
