The Seymour girls soccer team got an early goal against Jeffersonville on Tuesday as Irene Martinez found the back of the net just 11 minutes into the game.

Martinez’s goal at the 29:46 of the first half came from a nice through ball by Brooke Trinkle. It was the second-straight game that Martinez scored the first goal of the game.

The Owls held the Red Devils scoreless as they went on to win the game 2-0.

“She’s got a unique perspective on the game,” head coach Greg Musser said on Martinez. “She’s a foreign exchange student from Spain, so she grew up with the game a little different than girls over here. She sees the game pretty well, and she’s getting acclimated to her teammates.”

Seymour’s second goal came from Nicole Rebber, who launched it over the keeper’s head with 23:36 to play in the second half.

The Owls out-shot the Red Devils 6-1. Jeff had some speed up front, but Seymour’s backline and goalie Jessica Hougland did a good job containing them.

“Jeffersonville is always a team that’s very athletic,” Musser said. “We just needed to play our roles, trust the player next to you. It’s good they’re listening and being coachable. Very happy with that effort and with our girls believing in the girl next to them.”

Seymour, now 3-2 this season, will play in the Hoosier Cup Soccer Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Bloomington North.

“First and foremost, we love this trip as a team-bonding trip. We got an overnight, so the girls get to hang out together,” Musser said. “We’re looking for three really good games. We’re playing three quality teams, and it’s gonna be a lot of fun for us getting after it.”

The Owls’ JV team drew 0-0 with Jeff.
