Community health fair coming to Seymour

In an effort to keep Jackson County residents healthy and happy, a community health fair will be held outside a Seymour elementary school.

It’s set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 24 at the playground at Margaret R. Brown Elementary School, 550 Miller Lane.

The fair will not only provide general information about health and community resources, but the event also will offer screenings and assessments, an immunization clinic, food, giveaways and more.

Ashley Caceres with Jackson County United Way and Su Casa of Jackson County said United Way is partnering with the Indiana Department of Health to host next month’s event.

“They reached out and mentioned that Jackson County is a county with some unique vaccine needs, specifically for infants,” Caceres said. “They wanted to offer a free vaccine clinic for our county, as their data show a lot of families don’t do well with follow-up vaccines for infants.”

In response, Caceres said it was decided to host a community health fair.

“We chose this location because it’s a very walkable space, and a lot of people in the surrounding apartments and neighborhood walk through that playground, so it’s very visible with a lot of people coming through there,” she said.

Caceres said the Indiana Department of Health will be offering the free immunization clinic for adults and children.

“They do highly recommend that people register for the clinic ahead of time, but they do accept walk-ins,” she said. “There will also be community resources available, and right now, I believe we have 15 or 16 agencies and providers signed up.”

Caceres said the goal is to get people vaccinated and provide health resources to those who need them.

“So there’s a lot of really good stuff happening with this, and if any agencies or providers are interested in having a table at this event, please reach out. We’d love to have you there,” she said.

Caceres said she is encouraging agencies and providers to bring some freebies, games and maybe some things for children to do while at the health fair, but most important is the health information they’ll be bringing to the families that need them.
