Madison man dies in North Vernon accident

One person was killed in a two-vehicle accident on South State Street area near College Street in North Vernon.

North Vernon Police Department Sgt. Andrew Richmond said at 4:41 p.m. Monday, a black Chrysler PT cruiser, driven south by Roy W. Hawkins, 38, of Madison, crossed the center dividing lane and struck a southbound maroon Chevrolet pickup, driven by Justin Lucas, 34, of North Vernon.

Hawkins was trapped in his vehicle after the head-on collision, Richmond said.

After he was extricated, Richmond said Hawkins appeared to be in a favorable condition, but he quickly deteriorated on the way to the hospital.

The cause of Hawkins crossing the center dividing lane is being investigated.

Assisting at the scene were Jennings County paramedics and North Vernon Fire Department personnel.
