A 35-year-old Jennings County man died Friday evening after being involved in a crash involving the motorcycle he was riding in North Vernon.

Gerald Andrew Branam of North Vernon was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital, where he was taken after the crash at U.S. 50 and State Road 3, according to a news release from Sgt. Isaac Barkes with the North Vernon Police Department.

At 6:56 p.m. Friday, city officers were dispatched to a personal injury crash involving Branam’s 2014 Harley-Davidson and a 2007 Jeep Liberty driven by Steven P. Neal, 44, of North Vernon. Neal was not injured.

During the investigation, police reported they were able to determine Branam was traveling westbound on U.S. 50 toward the intersection with State Road 3 when he drove into the back of Neal’s vehicle, which had been stopped in traffic.

There was evidence that Branam had attempted to stop before the collision in which he was thrown from his motorcycle and received life-threatening injuries, police said.

Bystanders in the area were quick to render aid and begin life-saving measures until first responders arrived at the scene, police reported.

Life-saving measures were continued by first responders, and Branam was soon after transported to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital to be flown to another medical facility before he was pronounced dead.

A crash reconstructionist with the Indiana State Police was called to the scene. The investigation is ongoing; however, environmental factors may have been present.

During the investigation, the four-way intersection had a reduced traffic pattern and multiple complete closures over the course of two and a half hours.

Barkes said the department would like to thank the citizens who selflessly and compassionately assisted and all drivers for their patience and understanding.

Other agencies assisting at the scene included personnel with Jennings County EMS/Rescue 20 and Lucas Wrecker Service.
