Airport Road roundabout opens

The new roundabout on Airport Road on Seymour’s west side recently opened to traffic as contractors continue to make progress on completing the Burkart Boulevard South Bypass by October 2023.

As part of the continued construction of the final phase of the project, G Avenue will be closed from Second Avenue east to F Avenue, according to a news release from the city. G Avenue is open to these roadways. This area becomes the new bypass.

Phase 1 of the bypass was completed in October 2021 and involved the construction of roadway from Tipton Street to South O’Brien Street. More than 2 miles of new road was created, and a 12-foot-wide people trail also was constructed along the new roadway. That portion also saw construction of a bridge over the Louisville & Indiana Railroad.

Phase 3 was finished in September 2020 and saw the reconstruction of Airport Road from where the bypass connects to U.S. 50 on the west side of the city to G Avenue in the Freeman Field Industrial Park.

The final phase will connect the bypass from a roundabout on South O’Brien Street west to Airport Road.

The total cost of all three phases of the project is approximately $30 million. Around $6 million, or 20%, is coming from the Seymour Redevelopment Commission. Phase 1 of the project cost $17.23 million, and Phase 3 cost $1.8 million.

For a few hours today, C Avenue will be closed at the bypass crossing or just east of G Avenue. Traffic flagging is expected for this work to help vehicles with alternate routes.

On Aug. 20, B Avenue will be closed at the bypass crossing or A Avenue intersection for a few hours. To help vehicles with alternate routes, traffic flagging also is expected for this work.

Around or after Aug. 22, A Avenue will be closed at the bypass crossing or at the railroad crossing potentially until the bypass is completed.

Airport Road at G Avenue (where the old Freeman Field sign was located) has been closed to traffic since May. The closure had been expected to happen on or after May 23, but due to better weather than expected, utility poles in the construction area were moved a little earlier, allowing the construction to begin sooner.

“They are still working on the piece that connects from the roundabout on South O’Brien to Walnut Street,” January Rutherford, public information specialist for the city, said. “Then from Walnut Street through Freeman Field to Airport Road.”
