The Seymour tennis team gathered at Calvary Baptist Church last Thursday to wrap up its 2022 season.

The Owls started with a meal, which was followed by senior speeches given by Madalyn Baurle and Hiley Obermeyer. Assistant coach Liz Davis read Carley Sanders’ speech since Sanders was out of town.

Then head coach Sharon Wood gave an overview of the season, starting with junior varsity. Seymour’s JV team went 12-1-1 this season and had an incredible games won/lost record of 93-9. They went 23-0 at the Shelbyville Invitational and had seven matches that were 5-0 sweeps.

Emma Woodard won the JV mental attitude award, the JV 110 percent award went to Tori Fee and the JV most improved award went to Chantal Wilson.

For varsity, many thought it would be a rebuilding year for Seymour after losing a lot of senior production from a season ago, but when Wood looked back on it, the Owls did pretty well.

They had an overall record of 16-4 and won sectional for the third-straight season. The Owls went 15-0 in the Shelbyville Invitational, were Hoosier Hills Conference runners-up and had a set win/loss record of 74-31, including eight matches that were 5-0 sweeps.

The varsity singles player of the year award went to Brooke Schafstall, who went 16-3 at one singles, breaking Marley Vehslage’s record set in 2015. Schafstall also now has the career record at one singles at 31-8 over two years with her senior year still to be played.

The varsity mental attitude award went to Elise Hartung, who also set a record for most wins at three singles in a single season, going 17-1. Hartung broke Kirby Hill’s record, which was set last season.

The leadership award went to Obermeyer, and the 110 percent award went to Ava Sunbury.

Baurle set a two singles record, going 14-4 this season, and the two doubles team of Addison Hunsley and Jessica Hougland set a school record, going 12-4 this season.

Schafstall was HHC and all-district first team, while Baurle was HHC and all-district honorable mention. Both Schafstall and Baurle were all-state honorable mention.

Baurle, Obermeyer and Sanders were ICGSA academic all-state, and Obermeyer was IHSTECA academic all-state.

Lastly, the whole varsity team — Schafstall, Baurle, Hartung, Hunsley, Hougland, Obermeyer, Sanders, Sunbury, Ashley Clemente and Caroline Thompson — all helped Seymour achieve academic all-state with a team GPA of 3.8 or higher.
