County unemployment rate at 2.3%

Jackson County’s unemployment rate stood at 2.3% in March, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development’s latest report released Monday.

Overall, 22,724 county residents were on the job in March, which is 287 more than in the same month in 2021 when 22,437 county residents were working. The jobless rate at that time was 4%.

The number of county residents reporting they were looking for work in March of this year was 531, compared to the 934 who were looking for work during the same month a year earlier.

The county’s labor force was 23,255 in March, which is 116 less than the same month in 2021.

The county’s unemployment rate for March was lower than the state’s rate of 2.7% and the national rate of 3.8%.

Other nearby counties and their unemployment rates for March were Bartholomew, 2.2%; Brown, 2.8%; Jennings, 3%; Lawrence, 2.8%; Monroe, 2.3%; Scott, 3%; and Washington, 2.7%.

LaGrange County had the lowest rate in the state at 1.7% in March, and Lake County had the highest at 4.6%.
