County unemployment rate at 2.2%

Jackson County’s unemployment rate stood at 2.2% in February, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development’s latest report released Monday.

Overall, 22,785 county residents were on the job in February, which is 402 more than in the same month in 2021 when 22,383 county residents were working. The jobless rate at that time was 4.2%.

The February rate, which is preliminary, fell from the January 2022 final rate, which was 1.9%.

The number of county residents reporting they were looking for work in February of this year was 505, compared to the 972 who were looking for work during the same month a year earlier.

The county’s labor force was 23,290 in February, which is 65 less than the same month in 2021.

The county’s unemployment rate for February was lower than the state’s rate of 2.7% and the national rate of 4.1%.

Other nearby counties and their unemployment rates for February were Bartholomew, 1.9%; Brown, 2.1%; Jennings, 2.9%; Lawrence, 2.8%; Monroe, 2.3%; Scott, 2.9%; and Washington, 2.5%.

LaGrange County had the lowest rate in the state at 1.6% in February, and Lake County had the highest at 5%.
