Johnson and Johnson vaccine put on hold

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday a recommendation to pause the use of the single-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

This comes after an investigation into rare blood clotting in six recipients of the vaccine.

Schneck Medical Center in Seymour announced that any plans to administer the Johnson and Johnson vaccine have been put on hold until it has received direction from the CDC or FDA.

If anyone who has received the single-dose vaccine has experienced severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination, it’s recommended to contact their health care provider.

The Jackson County Health Department also got word from the Indiana State Department of Health that all Johnson and Johnson vaccine clinics are to be put on hold for the foreseeable future.

A Johnson and Johnson clinic was planned for Saturday at the Jackson County Fairgrounds, but that is now postponed.

The ISDH announced Tuesday that 4,907 Jackson County residents have tested positive for COVID-19, an increase of six from Monday’s total.

The positivity rate for Jackson County is at 6.5%, a 0.5% increase from Monday’s 6%, according to the department’s COVID-19 dashboard.

The rate is determined by a seven-day moving average with a six-day lag to give time to receive comprehensive results. The current positivity rate for the county would be for March 31 to April 6.

Jackson County is currently classified as a level 2 county and an orange level threat.

No new deaths attributed to COVID-19 were reported in Jackson County on Tuesday, meaning the county’s death toll remains at 69.

There have been 54,631 COVID tests administered to 18,527 individuals in the county since March 18, 2020, an increase of 96 from Monday’s total.

The latest results are as of 11:59 p.m. Monday. The coronavirus dashboard is updated at noon daily.

Also Tuesday, the state’s COVID-19 vaccination dashboard reported 12,009 or 27.1% of 44,231 Jackson County residents have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and 8,805 or 19.9% of county residents have been fully vaccinated.

In Jackson County, 886 residents have received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

Since Dec. 14, 2,018,362 Hoosiers have received their first dose, while 1,433,533 are fully vaccinated. There have been 128,783 Hoosiers who have received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

On Tuesday, 970 additional Hoosiers across the state were diagnosed with COVID-19 through testing at the ISDH, CDC and private laboratories.

This brings the total number of Hoosiers known to have had the novel coronavirus to 700,775 following corrections to the previous day’s total.

The state’s total number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 is 12,762 with 16 new deaths being reported Tuesday.

For the state, a total of 9,264,312 tests have been administered, an increase of 22,208 from Monday’s total.
