Gross leads Trinity softball to two wins

Kamzi Gross struck out 20 and allowed just one hit on the mound as the Trinity Lutheran softball team won its season-opening game 9-0 over Orleans on Monday, and then she and the Cougars polished off South Decatur 10-0 on Tuesday to move to 2-0.

Gross went seven innings in the opener, becoming more overpowering as the game went on, and then struck out 13 a day later in the five-inning victory.

“She was just dominant,” said Trinity coach Bob Tabeling.

Except for a shaky first inning that led to walks and hit batsmen in the first inning of the first game, Gross was untouchable.

“It was incredible,” Tabeling said.

Trinity piled up 11 hits against Orleans, and Gross was as enthusiastic a participant at the plate, as well, scoring three runs and being one of four Cougars who collected two hits apiece.

Bailey Tabeling, Genesis Munoz and Olivia Cain each batted safely twice and scored.

But the true hitting standout was Bailey Reynolds, who smacked three hits, including a double and a triple, and drove in four runs.

On Tuesday, Trinity exhibited the same type of firepower, belting out 14 hits in support of Gross, three times scoring three runs in an inning.

Munoz went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, and Gross hit a home run and a double while scoring twice. Cain, Bailey Tabeling, Bailey Reynolds and Ally Russell also each stroked two hits. Russell’s safeties were a double and a triple.

Coach Tabeling said the first hitters in the batting order have jump-started the offense.

“It’s off to a very good start,” he said. “We’re getting some good solid hitting from the top of the lineup.”
