A standoff of more than an hour Thursday morning ended with the arrest of a Jennings County man on at least three felony charges.

Anthony R. Dean, 57, of Hayden faces two preliminary Level 4 charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon and criminal confinement and a preliminary Level 5 felony charge of domestic battery in connection with the incident in the Hickory Hills subdivision in Hayden.

The charges stem from a report at about 9:45 a.m. Thursday of a domestic disturbance involving a firearm, according to a news release from Chief Deputy David Turner with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department.

While en route to the disturbance, officers were told a woman in the home had been held at gunpoint but was able to escape the residence and call for help.

Upon arrival at the home, officers tried to make contact with a man, identified as Dean, over the telephone, police said.

Dean, however, refused to answer his phone but attempted to make contact with the female victim, police said.

Officers then attempted to use a loudspeaker to call Dean out, but he refused to come out and continued to call the woman, police said.

Members of the Jennings County Emergency Response Team responded to secure the scene, and an Indiana State Police SWAT team was then contacted to respond.

Negotiators with the state police were able to make contact with Dean over the telephone.

On several occasions, Dean presented himself at the front door and walked out on the front porch, but he refused to comply with commands from the state police and went back inside his home.

Dean spoke with negotiators for more than an hour before he finally agreed to come out on the front porch and sit in a chair, police said.

Jennings County Sgt. Cody Low was able to position his K-9, Axle, to be deployed in a coordinated effort with the actions of the state police SWAT team.

Dean was bitten by Axle as he was trying to go back inside the residence. As Axle was trying to apprehend Dean, the dog was struck by Dean multiple times with a closed fist.

A less lethal option also was used by the state police as Axle was being struck by Dean and to assist in taking Dean into custody after a brief struggle.

Dean, who also faces a Class A misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement, was taken to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon for treatment of his injuries and was later booked into the Jennings County Jail, where he is currently being held on $2,650 bond.
