A 21-year-old Seymour man died Sunday evening after he was thrown from the motorcycle he was driving in far western Jackson County.

Quincey James Lee Coffey was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash reported at 6:40 p.m. in the 12000 block of West U.S. 50, according to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

Officer Aaron Wilkins said Coffey was driving a Harley-Davidson he had just purchased east on U.S. 50 when he made contact with a guardrail and was thrown from the motorcycle.

Several people who witnessed the incident or were passing by administered first aid and CPR until emergency personnel arrived, but a short time later, Jackson County Coroner Mike Bobb pronounced Coffey dead, Wilkins reported.

Several witnesses said they saw the motorcycle leave the road and hit the guardrail, Wilkins said.

Wilkins also said he had received reports that Coffey was not a very experienced motorcycle rider.

He said drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the accident.

Personnel with Jackson County Emergency Medical Services, Indiana University Health Ambulance Service and Carr Township Volunteer Fire Department assisted.
