Trinity girls soccer overpowers Austin 7-0

It was Senior Day, and the Trinity Lutheran girls only had three players to be honored Saturday, but they played more like graduate students or World Cup contenders in a 7-0 victory over Austin.

This was a one-sided home match where the field truly did belong to the Cougars, figuratively as well as literally. Most of the game was played only on a half of the field at a time with Trinity completely dominating play offensively and defensively.

It was a junior, though, Kailene Cockerham, who provided the most firepower. Booting home the largest number of big shots, Cockerham piled up three goals to lift Trinity to a 5-4 season record.

“We played our game,” Cockerham said. “I knew we could beat them if we came out strong.”

The shutout came rather easily, split between two keepers, Genesis Munoz in the first half and backup Samantha Enzinger in the second half. They each had to make just two saves.

“They had a little pressure at the beginning of the game,” Trinity coach Thom Hayes said of Austin. “I wasn’t happy what I saw in the first half, and then right away in the second half, we made some passes and scored.”

The score was still 3-0 Cougars at halftime, a solid lead on the partially cloudy day that mixed in a little wind to both keep competitors cooler and a little off-balance, but the offense did pick up over the final 40 minutes.

Cockerham scored her three goals and assisted on another. Flossie Cooper notched two goals and one assist. Emma Myers had a goal and three assists. And Sarah Lemming had one goal and one assist.

Munoz, Cooper and Erin Enzinger were the three seniors honored on an overall young team that Hayes believes is improving in time for the sectional.
