Schneck Medical Center confirmed its first case of COVID-19 on Sunday afternoon.

The patient is not a resident of Jackson County, according to a news release from the Seymour hospital.

In Indiana, there were 201 positive cases as of 10 a.m. Sunday with four deaths. Bartholomew, Jennings and Scott counties all have confirmed cases. The Indiana State Department of Health also reported a total of 1,494 tests. Nationwide there were 27,004 confirmed cases of coronavirus COVID-19 in the United States as of noon Sunday and 347 deaths.

Schneck notified the Indiana State Department of Health and the patient’s county department of health on Saturday of the positive result from a patient receiving medical care at the hospital.

The patient is currently in isolation at Schneck.

“Schneck is prepared. We are well-trained in every precaution and the use of personal protective equipment,” said Warren Forgey, Schneck’s president and CEO. “We are following the appropriate protocols set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Indiana State Department of Health to prevent exposure to other patients and our healthcare staff.”

Most cases of COVID-19 are mild and require sick individuals only to remain at home and minimize the spread of virus while they recover. “We urge individuals who believe they have been exposed to the virus or have concerning symptoms to call the Schneck Coronavirus Hotline at 812-524-4266 for guidance and recommended next steps in care,” said Dr. Eric Fish, who is executive vice president and chief operations officer at Schneck.
