A Seymour man faces two preliminary felony charges of child molestation after an investigation conducted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

Joseph Lee Day, 36, was arrested on Level 1 and Level 4 child molestation charges Monday after a monthlong investigation, police said.

An investigation by Detective Mark Holt began Dec. 4, 2019, after a report of sexual assault on two children under the age of 13.

Day was arrested by county Officer Zach Elliott and booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 10:46 p.m.

A Level 1 felony is punishable between 20 and 40 years with the advisory sentence being 30 years. A Level 4 felony is punishable between two and 12 years with an advisory sentence of six years.

Day was arrested in 2014 for failure to register as a sex or violent offender, a Level 6 felony. He pleaded guilty in 2015 and was sentenced to one year in jail by Jackson Circuit Court Judge Richard W. Poynter.

Holt was assisted by county Detective Sgt. Stan Darlage, county Detective Bob Lucas, Seymour Detective Troy Munson and the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.
