A truck stolen from a Seymour lumberyard was found in flames in Ripley County early Tuesday morning, police report.

Ripley County Sheriff Jeff Cumberworth said his department responded to a report at 6:26 a.m. Tuesday that a truck was on fire in a creek off County Road 700W in Holton. The community is about 30 miles northeast of Seymour.

The truck was reported stolen along with a forklift around the same time by employees with 84 Lumber at 183 Burkart Blvd. in Seymour. The forklift has not been recovered.

Just hours before at 8:05 p.m. Monday, Seymour police were called to the business after an infrared motion alarm was set off. Officers responded and found the gate was locked and the building was secure. A key holder with the business declined to come to the scene, police said.

Employees told Seymour police the front gate of the business was damaged during the theft, initially investigated by Officer Tim Toborg.

Seymour Detective Sgt. Greg O’Brien said the thieves entered the fenced-in area and took the truck and a three-wheeled forklift before driving through the gate. He estimated the value to be around $50,000 for the truck and forklift.

The truck is owned by a company that’s a contractor with 84 Lumber, police said.

O’Brien said the company was in the process of conducting an inventory and it’s possible other items were taken from the business.
