A 30-year-old Seymour man faces a theft charge after he and another man manipulated a barcode on an item at a local store, police report.

Thomas Ward Murray was arrested last week on a Level 6 felony charge of theft after he and another man placed another barcode on a car battery and purchased it.

Police said Murray paid for the battery at Walmart Supercenter, 1600 E. Tipton St., at the self-checkout aisle, according to a probable cause affidavit signed by Officer Crystal Schapson.

Murray paid $8.47 for the car battery, which sold in the store for $93.76 plus a $12 fee, Schapson wrote.

When questioned by Schapson, the two men did not provide a reason for why another sticker on the battery other than they should have paid closer attention.

Schapson wrote in court documents that surveillance video from the store showed Murray and the other man waiting in an aisle with car batteries. The other man left the aisle to go to the sporting goods section.

The video shows the man removing a sticker off a package of batteries.

He then returned to where Murray was waiting with the car battery in a shopping cart. The man then placed the sticker on the car battery.

Police continue to investigate the incident, and more arrests are expected.

Murray was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 11:03 p.m. Wednesday where he was held without bond.

A Level 6 felony is punishable by six months to two and a half years upon conviction.

Murray also has at least two prior convictions of theft, according to court records.
