Braves earn MSC victory, extend winning streak to four games

Going into the early week Mid-Southern Conference game, Brownstown Central baseball coach Brandon Tormoehlen relayed a simple message to his team.

He said that the game against Clarksville served as the midway point of the season, and there aren’t many games still guaranteed on the schedule.

The Braves responded to the thought.

Brownstown (11-4, 3-2 MSC) broke open a 2-1 lead by scoring five runs in the fifth inning for a 7-1 MSC win over the Generals.

“For the seniors, they now only have 14 games guaranteed. That’s it,” Tormoehlen said. “This group is pretty tight-knit. They come out and pull for each other. I think that message set in today. This thing is going quick.”

The win marked the fourth straight for the Braves, which finished the month of April with a record of 10-3.

After a scoreless first inning, the Braves put up two in the second.

Isaiah Wineinger led with a single, and was batted in by a double from Seth Borden with the next at-bat. Jalen Tiemeyer followed with a hit before Borden, with two outs, stole home after a pickoff attempt at first base.

The Generals cut the deficit to one in the fourth inning, as pitcher Webster Walls homered to right field on the first pitch of the frame.

Following a Wineinger walk, Borden tripled to push the Braves’ advantage to 3-1.

Matthew Garland singled to score Garland before hits by Lucas Hines and Matthew Bell loaded the bases with one out. Jake Pauley and Clayton Barger each reached first base on Generals errors with the next two at-bats, extending the Braves lead to 6-1.

Walls was then substituted for Clatyon Christie on the mound, but that didn’t stop the Braves from pushing one more run across home plate, as Clay Chastain brought the final run of the game in with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Tormoehlen said the top of the lineup got the offense rolling in the fifth inning.

“It was our third time through the lineup. Walls has a good arm, he was throwing in the low 80s for them,” he said. “After getting to him early, he kind of settled in. He was in a good rhythm. I told our guys to hit on our terms. Guys had some good at-bats, and we put some pressure on them.”

The Braves had 10 hits total and no errors.

Eli Brown pitched a complete game for the Braves, finishing with seven strikeouts, five hits, two walks and an earned run.

“I thought Eli did great,” Tormoehlen said. “The first couple innings, he was a little shaky before settling in. We haven’t been able to use him as much, he’s had some elbow issues early on in the year. Our trainer has done a heck of a job working with him and getting him ready. Defensively, when we’re throwing strikes, we’re sharp. We made all the plays behind him tonight.”

The Braves will host Corydon Central Thursday for another MSC game.
