Today, Seymour diver Devin Ramsey will attempt to win a state championship. Ramsey was not the only Owl competing at this weekend’s state boys swimming and diving meet, however.

Trevor Layne was in action during Friday night’s swimming preliminaries, competing in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The junior finished 18th with a time of 58.56 seconds — which left him just outside of the top 16 and a chance to swim in today’s finals, but also was a personal best.

“Tonight went great,” Layne said. “I dropped time. My goal was anything less than 58.75, and that’s what I got.”

Though he wasn’t able to extend his season into the final day, Layne said the experience he gained on Friday night helped offer some perspective on what he needs to do to prepare for his senior season.

“Just work harder, because now I know I can do it,” he said. “So hopefully I can come back next year.”

Ramsey enters this morning’s diving preliminaries with the third-highest regional score in the 32-diver field (472.75). The senior had totaled 557.25 in the sectional, the best in the state.
