Seymour swimming tops New Albany

Tuesday’s Seymour-New Albany swim meet is proof that every point counts.

The Seymour girls edged New Albany 90-86, while the Seymour boys had a much easier time, winning 129-53.

“They’re getting a little tired right now,” Owls coach Dave Boggs said.  “We knew with their boys, they graduated a lot of points last year and they couldn’t replace them all. We swam off a little bit tonight trying to find a few surprises. We swam kind of strong to be on the safe side.”

The Seymour (2-2) girls won seven events.

Sandy Cerino led the Owls by winning the 50 freestyle and 100 free, Maren McClure won the 100 butterfly, Brett Kleber won in the diving well and the Owls won the medley and 200 free relays.

New Albany won the 400 free relay, but the Owls placed second, fourth and fifth to score enough points to keep the lead.

“We looked at their results last year and they really didn’t graduate anybody and we lost a couple good girls last year,” Boggs said. “We knew it would be close. We told them the boys should be able to handle their meet fairly well, and the girls was going to be every last point.

“We talk about every last point. Even that fifth-place point is important. That’s one more point for us and one less point for them. That’s a two-point swing.”

Boggs said his experienced swimmers on both teams are improving the way he expects.

“We’re working. We’ve got a lot of new people,” he said. “We’re just trying to get everybody up to speed. We’re trying to get everybody looking like swimmers and divers and get them on the road to fast times and good dives.”

He said the new swimmers are also improving.

“We noticed at the (Columbus) North meet last week that they are doing a good job and they look like swimmers, so now, we’ve just got to try to get them faster and try to polish them up, make their starts stronger and make their turns quicker, little things like that,” Boggs said.

The Seymour boys won nine events with Dalton Polley winning the 100 and 200 frees, Devin Ramsey winning diving, Daniel Hartman placing first in the 100 fly, Trevor Layne winning the breaststroke, Brady Westfall winning the 50 free and the Owls taking all three relays.

Seymour will host the S Invitational on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.

Salem, Silver Creek, Southwestern, Switzerland County, Scottsburg and South Ripley will compete at the Owls’ pool.
