Seymour senior thrived in leadership role

Cole Fosbrink says several things are important to having success in soccer, and communicating and thinking ahaed are at the top of the Seymour players’ lists.

“Communication is No. 1,” Fosbrink said. “The next is your brain. It’s a thinking game, you’ve got to be smart. You have to read the play as it happens. Teamwork is the chemistry part.”

Fosbrink said he began playing in the Seymour rec leagues at an early age. He then joined the Cyclones in 2008, and later played with club teams out of Indianapolis and Bloomington before joining the Owls.

He also plans on playing on a club team from Bloomington again in the spring.

“I played left wing for my club teams and I played back for high school,” Fosbrink said. “With playing left wing for club and left back for high school that helped me get forward as a left back and helped us have more guys in the attack.

“I played on the outside so my first responsibility was, as a defender, keep the ball from getting past our defensive line. Our second job was to distribute it to up to the forwards. My freshman year, when I was on JV I played center mid in the middle of the field, but then when I got to varsity I went to outside back. Outside is more fun.”

Fosbrink, who was one of four captains this fall said, liked the leadership responsibilities.

The three-year varsity starter said you always need to practice hard, and have a positive outlook for any sport you play.

Fosbrink, who wants to play soccer in college, said he enjoyed getting physical.

“As you get older, it gets a lot more physical,” Fosbrink said. “We knew a lot of the refs and coach would tell us ‘hey, this guy will let you get away with stuff,’ and ‘this guy will not let you get away with stuff.’”

He helped the Owls beat Floyd Central and Columbus North this fall, and win the O-Cup for the third straight year. The wins over Floyd Central and Columbus East for the O Cup helped Seymour win the HHC with a 7-0 record.

Fosbrink said beating Floyd and Columbus North, “were the two big ones that we were focused on. I’m disappointed we didn’t win sectionals, but we had a really good season.”

He has enjoyed attending SHS.

“It’s a great school. I like math and history the most,” Fosbrink said. “The first thing I’ll remember is soccer. To returning players, it’s important that you really enjoy it because it goes by so fast. That’s the most memorable. There are a couple of teachers that I had that I really enjoyed.”
