Success festival

Thumbs-up to everyone involved in making the 50th annual Fort Vallonia Days this past weekend a success. That includes the more than 30 original founders of the festival who served as grand marshals for the parade, present committee members and all of the other volunteers. The festival celebrates the community’s rich heritage.

State finalists

Thumbs-up to Seymour’s Ashton Chase and Crothersville’s Kaylyn Holman who earned berths in the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s 38th annual girls state cross-country meet at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute. Chase, a senior, advanced by finishing fifth Saturday in the Brown County Semistate with a time of 18:55.5, and Holman, a freshman, became Crothersville’s first state qualifier by finishing 15th with a time of 19:09 for the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) course.

Five-time champs

Thumbs-up to the Trinity Lutheran High School volleyball squad who advanced to the Class A Loogootee Regional on Saturday by winning the school’s fifth straight sectional title Oct. 13 at West Washington High School. Members of the squad are seniors Abby Schult and Savannah Harweger; junior Hannah Sabotin; sophomores Elly Carter, Kennedy Hoffman, Sydney Jaynes and Bailey Reynolds; and freshmen Kayla Goecker, Paige Lawrence, Kaitlynn Rowe, Kamzi Gross, Taylor Marshall and Ruthie Bingham.

Stimulating stairs

Thumbs-up to students in Seymour High School’s bilingual Jobs for America’s Graduates program who recently brightened their environment by painting messages such as “Enjoy Life,” “Be an Encourager,” “This part of my life here, it’s called happiness,” “Sigue Tus Suenos” and “Todo es Posible” on staircases at the school. The messages are designed to uplift and motivate people to be their best selves and treat others with respect. It’s hard to find anything wrong with that concept.

Students of the month

Thumbs-up to Seymour Middle School Students of the Month for September: Cayden Furkin, Ekaterina Cox, Daniela Rodriquez Perez, Lillian Hartley, Rudy Vicente, Aubri Massengale, Madison Thompson and Samuel Chandler. A related thumbs-up to the school’s Teacher of the Month, Craig Montgomery.

More thumbs-up to Brownstown Central Community School Corp. Students of the Month: Seventh-grader Addisyn Osborne, sophomore Abby Stuckwisch and second-grader Mallory Wilson.
