BROWNSTOWN

Ethan Carlin, who played No. 1 singles for the Brownstown Central tennis team this fall, was named the Braves’ Most Valuable Player Tuesday night during the team’s awards program held at the high school.

Carlin posted a record of 14-6 this fall, and he was 6-3 in the Mid-Southern Conference.

“He always has a smile on his face,” Braves coach Mitchell Taylor said. “He had tough matches and he didn’t get frustrated. He came into his own as far as being a leader. He did a lot of things for our program.”

He was a four-year varsity letterman and during his freshman season he set a school record for wins in a season with a record of 22-2.

Carlin, along with Max McClure, was named Academic All-State Honorable Mention. Jackson Lahrman, McClure, Ethan Wischmeier, Gunnar Zickler, Kelian East and Reece Carlin were named an Academic All-State team.

Wischmeier received the mental attitude award.

“He knows what he wants to do on the tennis court, and he finds a way to win matches,” Taylor said.

Wischmeier was 7-2 in MSC matches, and was also a four-year varsity letterman.

East moved into the varsity line up toward the end of the season and was named the most improved player.

Lahrman and Zickler were named to the MSC all-conference first team. They were 8-1 in MSC matches, losing only to Silver Creek.

Reece Carlin received his letter jacket.

Taylor said it was special to see the seniors grow this season, and starting with the Scottsburg Invite, that the team improved mentally. He said he talked to them about being efficient in practices and in matches.

The Braves were 13-3 overall, and lost to Seymour in the sectional finals. They finished third in the MSC with a record of 7-2, and were third in the Scottsburg Invite.

After losing to Scottsburg on Aug. 23, the Braves won 10 straight matches before losing to Seymour in the sectional.
