Ethan Rust decided to join the soccer team when he entered Trinity Lutheran High School his freshman year.
However, his season came to a quick end.
“I didn’t get too far because I believe it was the first game we played, I broke my foot,” Rust said.
After sitting out his sophomore year to let it heal, he decided to give tennis a try his junior year.
“Most of my friends were doing it, and it just seemed kind of fun to hang out with them. I like playing with my friends and having a good time with them,” Rust said.
His junior and senior years, he is on the courts in the fall, as a player, and in the spring, as a manager for the girls’ team.
Rust played JV doubles his junior year and this fall he split his time between varsity and JV matches.
“For senior night I played No. 2 doubles with Nathaniel Bauman,” Rust said. “I usually played with Nathaniel when we played.
“I liked doubles. I liked having a partner out there, and because the court is so big I don’t like moving a lot. I can get out of breath because I have asthma. So it just kind of made it easier to have a partner.”
Rust preferred to play on the right side, so he could use his forehand.
“I liked playing at the back returning serves,” Rust said. “I think communication is really important because if you don’t have it then you really don’t know where you’re going. Say, if (an opponent) hits it, and my partner can’t get it, he says ‘you’ or ‘me.’ It just tells us where to go.”
Rust said winning the first set helped mentally.
“Winning the first set raises the morale for the last two,” he said. “If we’re starting out really good then we mainly do good near the end, but usually if we’re doing bad we still had fun with it either way. That is mainly why I joined tennis, just to have fun.”
He said TLHS was the right high school for him.
“I’m glad I came to Trinity because I’ve made a lot of better friends here,” he said. “My classes are pretty fun and I like the teachers. I’ll probably mostly remember all the clubs I’ve been in because those have been pretty fun.
“I like to help around the school like setting up for the dances, organizing student events, doing things for art club, going through the community and doing things for art club also. I believe every year for student government we donate some things to a family, and I think that is pretty cool.”
