Students at Seymour-Jackson Elementary School got a chance to see a flippin’, dunkin’, skatin’, rockin’ cat Friday as Boomer, the Indiana Pacers’ mascot, came to deliver an anti-bullying message to the school.

“We have a passion for helping students understand bullying and the negative impact that it can have on their classmates,” said Brandon Roberts, assistant principal at the school.

Boomer, who doesn’t speak, delivered his message through prepared signs, which he had students hold during the program, turning their message into a chant to help the students remember them.

The messages focused primarily on positive things the students could do instead of bullyng with sayings like “Friends Lift Up, Bullies Tear Down” and “Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.”

Jamie Russell, associate director of game operations with the Indiana Pacers, said this is the fifth year of the anti-bullying program with three of them including Seymour-Jackson Elementary School.

“We want students to always do their best and to think before they speak and about how their actions effect others,” she said.

The program, which lasted about 45 minutes, included stunts by Boomer. From doing a flip while dunking a ball to riding an electric unicycle, Boomer’s program tried to entertain as well as inform.

“I liked when he did a flip and dunked,” fifth-grader Whitney Reed said.

“It was fun. We learned we shouldn’t bully,” said Madison Shireman, another fifth-grader.

The anti-bullying program is one that the school plans to continue next year.
